Red cabbage with sesame seedsThis is such an easy side to prepare and cook, and tastes good hot,  warm or cold and even better the next day. It can be made in advance and heated or eaten cold. What more could you ask?

Tastes great with most meats especially pork and chicken.

RED CABBAGE SALAD – HOT OR COLD

Ingredients

  • Approx 1/4 red cabbage, finely shredded (using a mandolin is the fastest)
  • 2-3 red chillies, halved, deseeded and chopped or 1 tsp dried chillies
  • 1 thumb-sized piece ginger, peeled and finely sliced
  • 1 tsp chinese 5 spice
  • 2 tsp minced garlic
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp raw or brown sugar

Finishing

  • 4 spring onions, finely sliced
  • 2 tbsp sesame seeds, toasted
  • 2 tsp sesame oil

Cooking red cabbage

Method

  1. Put all the main ingredients into a pan with a lid and stir while bringing to a simmer.
  2. Put the lid on and cook over a low heat for 10 minutes, then uncover and cook, stirring occasionally, for a further 15-20 minutes, until most of the liquid has evaporated.
  3. Add the sesame oil and stir
  4. Put into a serving bowl and sprinkle with the spring onions and  sesame seeds.
